How can I make a phone call using VoIP?

Do I need special equipment to use VoIP?
A broadband/high speed Internet connection is required to use VoIP. This can be either through a cable modem, or high speed services like DSL or a local area network (LAN). You can hook up a microphone to your computer to use and send your voice through a cable modem or you can connect a phone directly to a telephone adaptor (which you will need to purchase).
Is there a difference between making a Local Call and a Long Distance Call?
Some VoIP providers are free for calls to other subscribers to the service. Your VoIP provider may permit you to select an area code different from the area in which you live. This means that you may not incur long distance charges if you place a call to a number in your assigned area code regardless of your actual location.
Some VoIP providers charge for long distance calls to a number outside your calling area, much like traditional landline telephone service. Other VoIP providers permit you to call anywhere at a flat rate for a fixed number of minutes. Some VoIP providers, like Skype offer a free service - but you also are likely to notice a lesser quality then you would using a paid VoIP service.
Instead, contact your new carrier and wait until your cell phone number is working with your new phone and carrier before canceling your old plan. Also be sure to time this with your contract for your existing carrier to avoid early termination fees.
