Toll Free Answers

Below you will find a listing of the most common questions we receive regarding toll free service and their answers. If you have a question about toll free service in general that is not covered here, please send us an email so we can answer it for you and then add it to the list.

What is a toll free number?

A toll free number (commonly referred to as an "800 number") is a service where the person receiving the call pays for the long distance charges, rather than the caller. Currently, any number that begins with 800, 888, 877, 866 or 855 is a toll free telephone number.

What can I use a toll free number for?

Many businesses employ the use of toll free numbers so that customers who are long distance from them can call without incurring any personal expense. Toll free numbers have become increasingly popular with residential users as well. Many people use them to allow family members or children in college to call them in lieu of collect calls and calling cards.

Will I need a second phone line?

No. When you get a toll free number, you will be asked to list a "ring to number". The "ring to number" is the number you want your incoming calls on the toll free line to ring in on. The toll free service provider will then forward all incoming calls on the toll free line to the "ring to number" you have requested.

Will all incoming calls to the "ring to number" be considered long distance?

No. Only calls made to the toll free number will be billed to you. If someone calls the "ring to number" directly, without dialing the toll free number, they will pay for the call themselves (unless the call to you is local for them).

Will having a toll free number affect the way I dial outbound calls?

No. You will place all outgoing calls from the "ring to number" as you normally would.

What does it cost to have a toll free number?

The pricing of toll free service will vary by company. Be sure to check around for the best rates. Bigger name companies can often charge a lot more than smaller, less advertised companies.

If I change long distance companies, can I take my toll free number with me?

Yes. Toll free numbers are portable and can be moved from company to company, provided you are in good standing with the billing on the account. However, there is usually an extra form required to get this accomplished.
