Dial Around services are most often used by consumers looking for cheaper International calling rates or cheaper in-state long distance rates than those provided by their normal long distance carrier.
By using a dial around service, you can bypass your current long distance provider to get cheaper rates on these types of calls, without having to change your long distance company.
Most dial around services are accessed by dialing a code such as 10-10 followed by a 3-digit access code. Some dial arounds are accessed by calling a toll free number before dialing the number you wish to call. Before choosing a dial around service, there are some questions you should ask to find the best dial around service for your calling needs.
Are there any monthly fees?
Some dial around's will charge a monthly fee for using their service. Most times, the fee is only charged for a month if you use the dial around number during that month. Be sure to find out if the dial around you wish to use will charge you a monthly fee, and if so, how much.
Are the rates affected by the time of day the call is placed?
Be sure to find out if the advertised rate is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Also be sure to make sure the rates are the same during holidays and holiday weekends. Some dial around carriers may also charge higher rates for call made during the day.
Are there any surcharges for each call placed?
A surcharge is a base charge by some dial around providers that you are charged each time you use their access code to place a call. For example, if a company charges a 25 cent surcharge per phone call, then you would be charged 25 cents each time you used the access code, just for using it, in addition to the charge per minute on the call.
Can the service be used from any phone number?
Some dial around services will allow you to use your dial around service from phones other than you home phone, while charging the calls to the account for your home phone, by giving you a special PIN to use, much like you would with a calling card.
What are the per minute rates?
The dial around company you choose should have the rates for both domestic and international calls clearly defined. Be sure to find the service with the best rates for your individual needs. Some services may have cheap rates to some countries, but carry a high domestic rate or vice versa.
